Richard and Carol Carlson moved to Sanford, N.C. in 1998 after spending 27 years in Anchorage, Alaska. Richard began his Alaska career with Touche Ross & Co. After a few years he and Joe Whitlock, friend and business associate, formed Whitlock, Carlson & Associates where Richard oversaw the tax department, concentrating on tax compliance, business and estate planning, and litigation support. Richard states, “I like to think that my clients become my friends through our relationship.” Upon moving to North Carolina, he feels fortunate to have retained many of his Alaska clients. According to Richard, “The clients think that correspondence via e-mail, phone and the post office have kept the communication as open and viable as our face-to-face meetings.”

With the help of the late Charles Jeffries, Richard has developed a North Carolina client base, which includes small to mid-sized businesses, as well as individuals.

It is the belief of the Carlsons' that Sanford has a rich heritage in its buildings and its people, and that this should be continued and celebrated. They feel blessed to be part of the community.
